On page optimization is the easiest way to define your page to the search engines. When you optimize a page to the search engines it not only sends a signal that you are defining what the page is about, you are making your page stand out by being more relevant on the topic that is being searched. As the search engines rank all of the pages the most relevant pages are listed higher in the search results.
Most people only click on the ten top search results in the first page. Making it to the first page, more so to the top three is a barometer of a sites success in search engine optimization.
